Twice I had the honor of working with the photo crew of Kinbon, the premier Japanese bonsai magazine. For this series the editor announced that the theme for the day would be ‘young White pine’. Searching through the greenhouses, Mr. Suzuki found this small pine---owned by my sempai, Tachi. I think Tachi probably wanted to do the first work on his tree, but he laughed it off. He was too busy working on another pine.

Here’s the pine before styling began.

This tree did not require much initial pruning. This series shows one small front branch removed. The rest was wired.

Everything goes right to left in Japanese magazines, even the photographs. The key branch is wired and set in this series.
Final leg...the apex.

Finished! Small tree, but with many shoots which were all wired. Four hours from beginning to end, with breaks to photograph the steps, and, of course, tea and snacks---which I served to the staff of Kinbon.
